First coffee since earthquake Today Just Haiti received the first shipment of green Kafe Lespwa beans to be exported from Haiti since the January 12 earthquake. We expect to have fresh supplies of all five Kafe Lespwa products in about a week, so we have resumed online sales. Disruptions caused by the earthquake had delayed the shipment, and the supply of roast coffee ebbed, forcing us to halt most online sales. More than ever since the earthquake, cash from coffee sales is a significant economic benefit for not only the farm families in the Baradères, Haiti, coffee growers’ association but also for the Baradères community. That’s because the community is now housing many more people—refugees from earthquake-affected areas. You can purchase Kafe Lespwa at: We expect at least one more shipment of coffee from the most recent harvest, which ended late last year. Right now, a new crop is forming on the coffee trees. When the new beans are harvested—beginning in late August—they will be the first to be processed using two brand new coffee-processing sites the growers constructed. They built the sites—and purchased depulping machines for them—by drawing on the revolving loan fund Just Haiti created last summer. The new sites should help the growers increase their production of high-quality coffee and further expand their membership. All proceeds from sales of Kafe Lespwa go to benefit the Baradères coffee growers’ association. |
