Why the farmers seek a loan [September 2009 update on status of loan] The grower’s association asked Just Haiti for a loan to build four sites for depulping, washing and drying coffee to prepare it for export. This will enable them to greatly increase the potential yield and quality of coffee. Each site will be a concrete pad 23 by 40 feet (900 square feet). A small building will occupy about one-third of the pad. Inside the building will be a hand-crank machine called a depulper. Using the depulper and water, growers will remove the pulp from freshly harvested coffee cherries and wash the beans. Then they will spread the beans over the 600-square-foot open area of the pad to dry. Dry beans will be stored in the small building until it is time to transport them for shipment. The map shows the location of the four sites (Fond-Tortue, Vincendron, Maplate and Fond-Palmiste), numbered according to the growers’ chronological priority for building them. |
