New “Haitian roast,” new coffee shipment
March 2, 2009

You now have more new choices for buying Kafe Lespwa. In response to customer requests, we’re pleased to offer “Haitian roast,” a very dark roast like the traditional coffees enjoyed in Haiti.

You can order Haitian roast Kafe Lespwa as whole bean, regular auto-drip grind, or as new espresso grind. In Haiti, roasted coffee beans are typically hand-ground to a fine powder.

You can purchase Kafe Lespwa online at http://www.justhaiti.org/buycoffee.htm.

The new offerings come as Just Haiti begins roasting a newly arrived shipment of green coffee beans from Baradères—2,396 pounds, almost three times as large as the last shipment.

Just Haiti is raising funds to make a loan to the coffee growers so they can greatly increase the quantity and quality of their coffee for export, as well as the numbers of subsistence farmers participating in the association. But to pay back the loan they will have to sell a lot more coffee than they do today. [September 2009 update on status of loan]

That’s where you come in. We—and the growers—have been very pleased with the response to Kafe Lespwa so far.

But as someone who wants to help build just relationships between consumers and producers, will you consider making Kafe Lespwa not just your “solidarity brew” but more of an everyday coffee in your household, workplace, or faith community?

Building a consumer market for Kafe Lespwa is crucial to the growers’ hopes to make their labors have a sustainable economic impact in their impoverished and remote community.

Remember, under our fair-trade-plus principle, not only are the Kafe Lespwa growers paid the prevailing fair-trade price for their green beans (currently $1.55 per pound). In addition, all sales profits go to benefit the growers’ association in Baradères.

Thank you for your continuing support.
